    how to make french toast

There are many simple pleasures in life. A picnic lunch on the first warm day of Spring. The smell of coffee brewing in the morning. The bonus fry at the bottom of your McDonald's bag. And French toast.

Who could've imagined dipping plain white bread in egg and cinnamon and frying it in a pan would be so satisfying? It's Sunday morning. Breakfast-for-dinner in a pinch. And one of the easiest things on the planet to make.

I soak my bread all the way through in the egg mixture. Some people don't do this. I never realized that until I was a house guest and my host made French toast one morning. She dipped the bread in egg, pulled it out immediately and put it in the pan. When I cut it, I could see the bread that had not been saturated. That's when I decided: I'm a full-saturation person when it comes to my French toast.

Crispy French Toast with Butter and Syrup: a Simple Pleasure in Life

I do keep it simple with my French toast. Because of the full-saturation method, I allow for one egg per slice of bread. I use plain, old white bread - nothing fancy. No Texas Toast or other thick-cut variety. Just plain white bread. I indulge a little with the cinnamon and vanilla and it adds just the right flavor enhancement. This is the kind of simple recipe you can teach your kids when they're just learning to cook. Quick and easy! Instructions

    1. Beat milk and eggs in a bowl until well blended.
    2. Transfer egg mixture to a pie plate so it’s easier to dip the bread.
    3. Add vanilla extract and cinnamon to eggs and whisk together.
    4. Heat oil in a pan on low to medium heat.
    5. Soak bread thoroughly in the egg mixture and transfer to hot oil. I like to make sure the oil is crackling with a finger-lick test with a bit of the egg. I love crispy French toast!
    6. Cook the French toast about 3 minutes on each side or until crispy.
    7. Top with butter and maple syrup.
    8. Serve immediately.
